    Nonaqueous Routes to Oxide Materials

  • Original language description

Nonaqueous synthetic routes leading to oxide materials based on the chemistry of organometallic compounds, coordination complexes, and alkoxides and they are being studied with the aim of preparing new important and useful materials, which can function as catalysts, adsorbents, and ceramics. We are interested in developing new synthetic methodologies for bi- or multimetallic oxides, phosphates, phosphonates, and silicates. Sol-gel techniques rely on hydrolysis and condensation reactions in alcoholic solutions of metal alkoxides. However, they generally fail in the preparation of multimetallic oxide systems where perfect homogeneous mixing of metals at the molecular level is required. The reasons for this are different hydrolysis rates of the precursors, alkoxide ligand exchange, and reversibility of the oxolation reaction. To overcome these drawbacks several alternative procedures have been explored. Completely new anhydrous approach has been described as a nonhydrolytic sol-gel route.
