Photodegradation of Halophenols in Water Ice
Original language description
Ice photochemistry of various halophenols is reported. Unlike the photolysis in liquid water where only a photosolvolysis reaction occurs, dimerization and dehalogenation reactions were the main observed pathways (scheme). The products, hydroxychlorobiphenyls, are in fact partially dehalogenated PCBs. Although not as toxic as the parent PCBs they may introduce a considerable risk to the environment.
