The Reaction of Selenium Trioxide with Pyridine-N-oxide.

  • Original language description

Donor-acceptor compounds of higher selenium and sulphur oxides with organic oxygen donor attract relatively low attention, even thought a high Lewis acidity of these oxides and basicity of oxygen atoms in organic oxygen donor molecules imply their existence and in the case of sufficient stability also their practical use. The stability of a donor-acceptor compound is limited by migration ability of groups attached to the donor atom. The rearrangement results in the formation of ester of the corresponding acid. The preparation of stable donor-acceptor compounds of sulphur trioxide with 1,4-dioxane 1-5, pyridine-N-oxide and triethylaminoxide was reported. Adducts with 1,4-dioxane were successfully employed as mild sulfonating agents in synthesis of organic sulfonic acids. In relation to high reactivity of selenium trioxide towards most of organic compounds it should be possible to use stable adducts of selenium trioxide in an analogical way.
