Magnetic orientation in the mealworm beetle Tenebrio molitor and the effect of light

  • Original language description

There is evidence for both light dependent and non light dependent mechanisms of magnetoreception of terestrial animals. One example of a non light dependent mechanism frequently cited is the magnetic compass of the mealworm beetle (Tenebrio molitor). Wefound a) that magnetoreception of mealworm beetle per se is a replicable phenomenon but b) in contrast to earlier findings, Tenebrio only exhibited consistent magnetic compass orientation when light was present. The problem whether the loss of orientation is due to light-dependent magnetoreception mechanism, or instead to an effect of motivation change is discussed.

Magnetická orientace potemníka moučného a vliv světla
