The RECETOX-TOCOEN consortium has monitored nearly 1000 soil samples from over 200 localities in the Czech Republic during years 1988 - 2003. The aim of this contribution is: i) show the summary results of soil contamination and ii) show the statisticalanalysis results aimed to explore the relationships between microbial characteristics and soil properties. Summary statistics for soil contamination can be used for comparative purposes e.g. as the reference values. Statistical analysis based on microbial characteristics discerned six reasonable categories of soils from the data: arable soils, loamy grassland soils, sandy grassland soils with weak organic matter content, sandy grassland soils with moderate organic matter content, forest soils with moderate organic matter content, and forest organic soils with rich organic matter content.
