Photochemistry of organic compounds in the presence of inorganic nitrates and nitrites in water ice matrix
Original language description
In this study, we focused on the photochemistry of organic compounds in ice in the presence of inorganic nitrates and nitrites, which are the potential source of photoinduced reactive species, such as OH and NOx radicals. The photoproduction of gas phaseNOx above the snowpack surface in polar region is now well established [1, 2]. Besides, nitro-, nitroso-, and hydroxyphenols are known to be produced in the photolysis of aqueous solutions of these inorganic salts in the presence of aromatic compounds under laboratory conditions. For this work, we observed that the reactive radical species react with aromatic compounds present in the grain boundaries of ice to produce hydroxy- and nitrocompounds. The dependence on dissolved oxygen and availability of proton in the experimental systems containing phenol, methoxybenzene, or methoxyphenol, were studied. The results show that a great variety of bimolecular reactions can occur in natural ice or snow.
