BENTHIC INSECTS? LARVAE RESPONSE TO DROUGHT IN INTERMITTENT STREAM ? A CASE STUDY FROM THE CZECH REPUBLIC
Original language description
Unstable hydrological regime, caused by drying up of streams, induces changes in abiotic parameters and also impacts macroinvertebrates.Semiaquatic groups,as chironomids larvae,or first instars of nemourid larvae can survive in moist substrate.Other insect larvae can escape to aquatic refugia by drift or upsream movement.Research of benthic macroinvertebrates was carried out at intermittent stretch of brook, periodically dries up in summer.Samples were taken by quantitative method every 3 weeks during summer from three habitats:riparian zone, rifflepool.Abiotic parameters was measured (incl.changes in morphology, water temperature, conductivity).Samples of substratum and insect larvae, which can survive drought in moist substrate, were taken from dry streambed.Sampled habitats differ in densities (highest in pool) but taxa richness does not show differences. After reflooding recolonization rate and response of temporal fauna was evaluated and differences between groups were discussed.
