The role of facultatively apomictic mothers in the generation of ploidy variation in two model populations of hawkweeds (Hieracium subgen. Pilosella, Asteraceae).

  • Original language description

The capacity of facultatively apomictic maternal biotypes to generate ploidy variation was compare with corresponding role of sexual biotypes in two polyploid hybrid swarms comprised of Hieracium pilosella, H. bauhini and their homoploid or heteroploid hybrids (sexual, apomictic or sterile). While the sexual mothers predominantly retained a rather narrow range of ploidy levels in their progeny, the facultative apomictic mothers produced progeny of much more variable ploidy. Apomictic mother were able toproduce viable seeds via parthenogenesis, hybridization and haploid parthenogenesis.
