Czech research activities and ecosystem studies performed in the Northern part of the James Ross Island, Antarctica
Original language description
Since 2005, an integrated multidisciplinary study of structure and function of terrestrial ecosystems has been carried out in the neighbourhood of the Czech Antarctic station J.G.Mendel, James Ross Island (63 50 S, 57 50 W), Antarctica. In the northern part of the James Ross Island, atmospheric factors and local climate are studied as a part of a broad ecological investigation of terrestrial ecosystems. The effect of microclimate on the recent deglaciation and the energy relationship between the atmosphere, Earth surface and soil substrates are in the center of our interest. A special attention is devoted to monitoring of solar radiation and its characteristic components, in particular UV radiation, erythemally effective UV-B radiation and photosynthetically active radiation. Terrestrial algae, cyanobacteria, lichens and mosses form communities of fragmented vegetation oases sparsely distributed in deglaciated areas of the northern part of the James Ross Island, Antarctica. Among them,
