Straw stalactites from building constructions
Original language description
The stalactites formed in adits of the Pumped Hydroelectric Power Station Dlouhe Stráně were studied. In contrast to cave calcite stalactites, the adit stalactites are comprised by skeletal calcite crystals of parallel orientations. The calcite is very pure similarly to calcite of cave stalactite. The growth mechanism is unique: Water percolating through concrete is firstly highly alkaline and undersaturated with respect to both calcite and CO2(g). The supersaturation to calcite, a principal condition for calcite precipitation and calcite speleothem growth, is reached after dissolving of an additional CO2 from atmosphere.
