The puzzling binary HD 143418
Original language description
HD 143418 is a double-lined binary, whose primary was designated as CP star. We acquired new spectra in order to study spectral line variability, a possible magnetic field and for abundance determination, which was performed by means of synthetic spectra. The photometric observations were subjected to a PCA disentangling of the complex photometric behaviour. Equivalent widths of the lines selected do not change; the star has no magnetic field. The abundance agrees solar chemical composition. The photometric variability is due to ellipticity of the primary component. We conclude the primary is a normal, mildly evolved A5V main sequence star. Seasonal orbitally modulated light variations may be related to the expected incidence of circumstellar matter originated from tidally spinning up primary component. HD 143418 may be a prototype of a rare detached interacting close binary containing subsynchronously rotating primary passing through its synchronisation stage.
