Diversity of Macrogyrodactylus spp. (Monogenea:Gyrodactylidae) across Africa: molecular and morphological comparisons
Original language description
Monogenean worms infesting the gills of African catfish Clarias gariepinus (Burchell 1822) from a wide geographic range including Zimbabwe; Kenya and Senegal were analysed using morphological and DNA methods (the complete ITS rRNA region). Four species were identified: Macrogyrodactylus congolensis Prudhoe 1957; M. clarii Gussev 1961; M. karibae Douellou et Chishawa 1995 and M. heterobranchii NDouba et Lambert 1999; with the molecular data confirming the morphological species identification. Also a single Gyrodactylus specimen was also found among the Zimbabwean samples and is tentatively idendified as G. rysavyi Ergens 1973 based on morphology. We document new records and new distribution ranges of the Macrogyrodactylus species present a molecular phylogeny and discuss their relationships. Despite the wide geograhpic sampling the intraspecific diversity in the ITS region is surprisingly low.
