Quantification of retrotransposons in Eleocharis using degenerate real-time PCR
Original language description
The genus Eleocharis (Cyperaceae) comprises about 200 species of marsh and wetland habitats. Compared to the most of angiosperm genera Eleocharis species are unique in their karyological features. They differ considerably in 1C genome sizes (21.4 fold from 0.42 pg in E. cellulosa to 9 pg in E. uniglumis subsp. sterneri) and average chromosome sizes (roughly 150 fold from about 2 Mbp in E. cellulosa to 299 Mbp in E. xyridiformis). In Eleocharis, genome size and average chromosome size increase towards phylogeneticaly advanced species. The aim of this study was to consider the role of retrotransposons in such phenomenon.
