MICROWAVE PLASMA SYNTHESIS OF IRON NANOPARTICLES

  • Original language description

Microwave discharges offer wide range of experimental conditions for synthesis of various iron nanoparticles, including iron oxides, carbides and nitrides. In our work two types of discharges were used: i) microwave plasma torch operating at atmosphericpressure and ii) low pressure surface wave discharge. Ultrafine iron nanoparticles (ala-Fe, diameter of 10 nm and less) were produced by plasma decomposition of iron pentacarbonyl (0.1 g to 1 g per hour) in argon or a mixture of iron pentacarbonyl and hydrogen. In case of iron oxides synthesis, oxygen was added to the gas mixture instead of hydrogen. Pure fractions of iron oxides were synthesized. Synthesis of the iron carbides and nitrides was also investigated. In this case hydrocarbon or ammonia wasadded to the gas mixture. The plasma was monitored by optical emission spectroscopy. The samples composition was investigated by XRD,HR-TEM and Mössbauer spectroscopy.
