Procamallanus (Procamallanus) laeviconchus (Wedl, 1862) - really the only species of the subgenus Procamallanus parasiting fish in Africa?
Original language description
Parasitic nematodes referable to Procamallanus (Procamallanus) laeviconchus (Wedl, 1862) were obtained from stomachs of various African freshwater fishes in Senegal and Kenya. Adults and first-stage larvae of P. laeviconchus were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and light microscopy (LM). First-stage larvae from females' uteri were studied by SEM for the first time. Their tail tips are provided with several minute digit-like projections. Procamallanus laeviconchushas a wide host spectrum and geographical distribution in Africa. Morphological features found in adults suggest that P. laeviconchus is a complex of at least three morphologically similar species poorly recognizable by LM.
