Magnetic Field Studies of Herbig Ae/Be Stars

  • Original language description

We report on the status of our spectropolarimetric studies of Herbig Ae/Be stars carried out during the last years. For the first time we examined the relation of the measured field strengths with various parameters that characterise the star-disk system. We could show that stronger magnetic fields tend to be found in younger Herbig stars and completely disappear when stars arrive on the ZAMS, indicating that the magnetic fields of Ap/Bp stars are not fossil. New determinations of the mean longitudinalmagnetic field for several Herbig Ae/Be stars are presented. The longitudinal magnetic field measurements of MWC 480 reveal the presence of a strong kG field, which was undetected in our previous low-resolution polarimetric observations with FORS 1. Themagnetic field geometries of Herbig Ae/Be stars studied with spectropolarimetric time series can likely be described by centred dipoles with polar magnetic field strengths of several hundred Gauss.
