Palaeoecology of Middle Badenian Limestones from Stupava-Vrchná Hora (Vienna Basin, Slovakia) based on analyses of the coralline algal species (Rhodophyta, Corallinales, Sporolithales)

  • Original language description

Lithothamnion limestones of Vrchná Hora are known since second half of 19th century, when Adrian (1863) marked them on geological map of 1:144 000 scale. Coralline algae (Rhodophyta, Corallinales, Sporolithales), as main component of these limestones, are dominant in Cenozoic shallow water ecosystems, and many identified species from Vrchná Hora still inhabit recent seas. They provide a usefull paleoecological tool in interpretations of Badenian limestones from Vrchná Hora. Nine species of algae were dscribed: Lithothamnion sp., L. minervae, L. ramosissimum, L. valens, Phymatolithon calcareum, Mesophyllum sp., Lithophyllum sp., Spongites sp. a Sporolithon sp.. Three of described species are known also as recent species: Lithothamnion minervae, Lithothamnion valens a Phymatolithon calcareum. Skeletal association corresponds to common warm temperate to subtropical rhodalgal biofacies.
