On the origin of the mechanical properties of W-B-C coatings with different W content
Original language description
The use of protective coatings especially on the cutting and machining tools rapidly increased during last decades. Typical nowadays industrially used protective coatings are ceramic-based, therefore they exhibit high hardness together with low ductility which may lead to the premature failure of the coating due to crack propagation. Thus, development of the coatings which can simultaneously provide high hardness and enhanced ductility is highly demanded. Nanolaminated crystalline X2BC coatings (X is a transition metal) have been predicted by ab-initio calculations to exhibit high hardness and moderate ductility. W2BC was chosen for the present study.
