Verified technology for the optimized plasma treatment of non-woven substrate to enhance the adhesion of electrospun nanofibers

  • Original language description

The aim of this verified technology was to perform experiments on plasma treatment of Polypropylene Spunbond (PP SB) 30 gsm non-woven textile to enhance the adhesion properties between the material and the deposited Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofibers for their future usage as air and water filters. A Diffuse Coplanar Surface Barrier Discharge (DCSBD) was used as a plasma source. Two configurations of electrodes (planar and curved) were tested in ambient air.

  • Economical parameters

Plasma pre-treatment of the carrier substrate leads to improved adhesion of the nanofibers to the carrier fabric. This step could omit the lamination step for some types of products using nanofiber membranes (e.g., drapes). The treatment of the nanofiber layer leads to partial sintering and fixing of the fibers together, which again improves their mechanical abrasion resistance. The nanofibers treatment also leads to their chemical modification, which can improve, for example, their wettability and thus their permeability to liquids. Leaving aside the acquisition costs of the plasma treatment apparatus, operating costs can only be expected to be associated with electricity consumption.
