Distribution of glochidial larval stages of uniocean mussels (Mollusca: Unionidae) within the populations of host fishes.

  • Original language description

The glochidia, the larval stage of freshwater uniocean mussels, parasite on the fins and gill apparatus of fish. Their distributions were studied on three model fish species, roach ( Rutilus rutilus), perch ( Perca fluviatilis ) and bitterling ( Rhodeussericeus ). Between 1997 and 1999, the fishes were obtained from the dead armes of the Morava River in South Moravia near Lanžhot. The whole sample contained 618 bitterlings, 619 perches and 642 roaches from 12 dead armes. Glochidia of two genera, Unio and Anodonta, were gathered. There was a difference in spatial distribution of glochidia on the body of the host fish. Smaller Unio glochidia were mostly located on the gills, but larger Anodonta glochidia on the fins of the fish. The highest number of glochidia was observed on caudal and dorsal fins preferring the marginal parts. As for the gill blades, glochidia preferred second and third blade. From the three studied fish species, the highest occurrence of parasites was found in perch,
