Coherence and Cohesion in newspaper discourse with a focus on crime reports in the modern British press
Original language description
This chapter explores coherence and cohesion in newspaper reports on crime. The author emphasizes the role of discourse strategies typically used in this kind of reports as well as the background and experience of the readers, which participate in coherence considerably. The research has shown that cohesion is typically constructed by lexical devices, mainly naming strategies, the use of nouns, and names and their forms. Out of grammatical devices it is mainly the use of the passive and active voice, which serve as important cohesive devices.
