    The chapter draws on a long-term research dealing with the position and function of literature for children and youth in communication with addressees with special educational needs, transormations in treatment of the topic of handicap in the Czech literature for children and youth in the 20th and 21st centuries. The literary treatment of handicap reflects the social attitude to it. Handicap as a central ideological-thematic element does not come to the foreground until the current literature for children and youth.
