Václav Hlavatý: an American mathematician with a Czech name?
Original language description
In July 1953, the New York Times brought a piece of news in the headline, ?Einstein Cosmos Equations Solved?, together with a picture of Václav Hlavatý at the blackboard. Hlavatý only started to systematically work on the problem after he came to IndianaUniversity in Bloomington, but he had been interested in the connections between relativity theory and mathematics since the start of his career in differential geometry. In my talk, I will show how the individual steps in his career brought him to theposition at Indiana University. It is a story of hard work, strong opinion, and sometimes also a bit of good luck.
