Variation in the choice and use of epistemic lexical verbs in linguistics and economics research articles: An intercultural (Czech - English) perspective
Original language description
This contribution explores rhetorical variation in the choice and use of epistemic lexical verbs in research articles written in English by Anglophone and Czech scholars representing two soft academic disciplines – linguistics and economics. The aim of the investigation is twofold: (i) to find out whether in agreement with recent previous research (Gotti 2012, Mauranen et al. 2010, Pérez-Llantada 2010) the English-medium texts by Czech scholars display hybridised forms resulting from the mixing of the Czech and Anglophone academic writing conventions, and (ii) to explore whether the culture of the discipline is a more decisive factor than the culture of the writer in Czech academic texts written in English.
