International Conference Gallery under the Pressure: Political Influences on the Cultural Sector in Central and Eastern Europe

  • Original language description

The one-day international conference “Galleries Under Pressure: Political Influences on the Cultural Sector in Central and Eastern Europe” focused on various forms of political influence on the cultural sector in Central Europe, Ukraine, and Serbia. Conference presentations addressed exhibition curation, education, audience engagement, and how cultural institutions find ways to remain resilient in times of crisis. Speakers included Leszek Karczewski, former head of the education department at the Museum of Art in Łódź and current deputy director there, who is also affiliated with the Faculty of Philology at the University of Łódź, and Nikola Macura from the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad. The conference also featured the research findings of doctoral students MgA. Andrea Kaňkovská and MgA. Ondřej Horák, who presented a paper titled “POLITICAL INFLUENCE ON PROGRAMMING AND AUDIENCE ENGAGEMENT IN ART GALLERIES AND MUSEUMS IN CENTRAL EUROPE.” The conference brought together experts from public institutions, the academic community, and independent initiatives, creating a space for sharing experiences, reflecting on the current state of affairs, and exploring ways to strengthen the cultural sector’s resilience against political interference. The conference also included a supporting program at the OFF/FORMAT Gallery on November 26 and the opening of the exhibition Students in Blockades at the Sibiř Gallery following the conclusion of the conference program.
