Peripheral innovation systems in the Czech Republic at the level of the NUTS3 regions

  • Original language description

Innovation is considered the main factor of social and economic development and the source of competitiveness of regions and countries. The research into innovation systems concentrates on innovative regions mainly and these are especially metropolitan and urban areas. By contrast, small attention is devoted to the innovation development in peripheral or rural regions. The aim of this paper is to apply the theory of the regional innovation systems typology and find relevant indicators that can be used as a basis for the determination of peripheral regional innovation systems at the level of Czech regions. Applying the point method and the cluster analysis, we found out that the definition of peripheral regions fits the best regions Vysocina, Usti, South Bohemian and Karlovy Vary. In peripheral regions, the strategy of catching up with the more developed regions is recommended for the innovation policy.
