Laser diode thermal vaporization inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry
Original language description
A new approach of sample introduction to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), laser diode thermal vaporization (LDTV), is presented. In contrast to existing sample introduction systems based on laser ablation, the technique employs a low-cost NIR diode laser rather than an expensive high-energy pulse laser. Defined submicroliter volumes of samples are deposited on a suitable sample carrier with an absorber, such as common office paper with commercial printer black ink. The diode laserenergy is sufficient to induce burning and/or pyrolysis of the carrier substrate sample which leads to aerosol generation. Selection of optimal conditions, e.g., experimental arrangement, raster, scan speed, additives etc. will be discussed. The limits of detection of Co, Ni, Zn, Mo, Cd, Sn and Pb deposited on the preprinted paper were found to be in the range of 4 ? 300 pg. Applicability was demonstrated on determination of lead in whole blood and tin in canned food.
