Estimating the degree of Mg corrosion using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy

  • Original language description

We report on the potential use of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) for direct estimation of Mg corrosion degree. This work concerns optimization and comparison of the table-top and stand-off LIBS systems as well as the preliminary study to prove the capability of LIBS technique for corrosion detection. In order to simulate real corrosive environment, Mg samples were prepared in the aging chamber. The properties of corrosive layer on the surface of the sample significantly affect the laser-matter interaction, i.e. the matrix effect. Consequently, the properties and persistence of laser-induced plasmas (LIPs), generated on such degraded surfaces, essentially differ. Collected radiation of LIPs is then analysed and the intensities of ionic and/or atomic spectral lines are correlated with the degree of metallic corrosion. Parallelly, X-ray computed microtomography (uCT), metallographic tests and optical profilometry were utilized to obtain more complex information about the degr
