Gellner?s Encounter with Soviet etnografiia

The study evaluates Gellner interest in Soviet ethnografiia in the 1970s and 1980s which culminated by his one year stay in Moscow in the middle of Gorbachev era. Gellner was intererested in Soviet theory of primitive society, emergence of the state, nomadism, ethnos. Thereby he tried to understand Soviet type of Marxism. The author weighs the positives and negatives of Gellner?s search for a common language with Soviet ethnographers and concludes that it was an important episode which has its place ingeneral Gellner?s research on modernity. Nonetheless Gellner was fascinated also doctrinal aspects of Soviet version of Marxism, he sought for inconsequences but also peculiarities. After 1990 however this interest gave place to the study of nationalism,democracy and civil society in postcommunist Europe.

Studie hodnotí Gellnerův zájem o sovětskou etnografii v 70. a 80. letech 20.století, který kulminoval jednoročním pobytem v Moskvě uprostřed Gorbačovovy éry. Gellner se zajímal o sovětské teorie prvotní společnosti, vzniku státu, kočovnictví, etnosu. Tímse snažil o porozumění sovětskému typu marxismu. Autor studie zvažuje pozitiva a negativa Gellnerova hledání společného jazyka se sovětskými etnografy a uzavírá, že šlo o významnou epizodu, která má místo v celkovém Gellnerově bádání o modernitě. Nicméně Gellnera fascinovaly i doktrinální aspekty sovětské verze marxismu, hledal nedůslednosti, ale i zajímavosti. Po roce 1990 však tento jeho zájem ustoupil studiu nacionalismu, demokracie a občanské společnosti v postkomunistické Evropě.
