Growing up Under Lindberg's Presidency: Philip Roth's The Plot Against America as Alternate History
Original language description
The article analyzes Philip Roth's The Plot Against America (2004) as novel that presents alternate history of the 1940s in the United States and questions to what ends he uses this refiguring. The novel is placed in context of Roth's other writing but more importantly, the article focuses on the way it blends several literary genres into a compact and effective whole. The chapter analyzes how Roth creates an imaginative alternative to US history and how he innovates the traditional genres of the Bildungsroman and autobiography to address serious issues of stability of American democracy, validity of its values, racial relations.
