Playing with history in Macura's prose
Result description
Historical prose has always been a fruitful genre in Czech literature, however, only few novels received positive reviews after 1989. One of the marked exceptions is the work of Vladimír Macura. This article focuses upon the existential issues in his tetralogy "Ten, který bude". It analyses the motif of barricade in 1848 and the diverse roles it plays in the different parts of tetralogy. Moreover, it depicts the departure from the traditional model of historical prose and draws attention to the "game" strategy. This is the key to the interpretation of the cycle and to the re-interpretation of the views on the Czech National Revival in the Czech culture.
