Nowadays, Kabyles - the Berber-speaking inhabitants of North-Eastern Algeria - associate themselves and are often associated with secular principles and democracy. By Algerian Arabs, Kabyles are often stigmatized as bad Muslims and sometimes even as badAlgerians. This contemporary image of Kabyles shared by Kabyles themselves, Arabs and Europeans has a clear continuity with the image created by French colonial administrators and scholars. Although Kabyle culture was portrayed as oral in opposition to Arab written culture, Kabyles were not debased as "primitives". Because of their pre-Islamic history (supposed influence of Antique Rome and Christianity), their way of life as sedentary peasants and their pre-colonial political institutions, they were supposed to be akin to French. Based on primary and secondary sources, my paper shows how the colonial image about Kabyles was created. I also deal with the persistence of the image created by colonizers in anthropology and in Alg
