Original language description
The main subjects of this study are the subjugation of the countryside in the form of forced collectivisation and the resistance to it. Using the example of the population of Vrchlabí district in North-East Bohemia, the author attempts to address question including what forms the resistance to collectivisation took, what it stemmed from, what the limits of its success were, and what reaction it produced in the structures of the Communist-controlled state apparatus. The strategy of subjugating the stubborn countryside through forcible collectivisation was one of the central planks of a plan to construct socialism in Czechoslovakia. In this study, the author explores the active resistance of villagers to the implementation of this Communist strategy in the foothills of Bohemia?s Krkonoše (Giant) Mountains, the response from administrative, political and security agencies, and the consequences for the lives of those involved.
