Banker Bulstrode Doesn't Do Wrong Intentionally. A Study of Self-deceptive Wrongdoing
Original language description
The paper aims at analyzing thoroughly a certain type of moral wrongdoing that has been often neglected in contemporary ethics. It is concerned with action accompanied with self-deception due to which the agent lacks a clear wrong intention and thereforedoesn't acknowledge his guilt and doesn't regret it. An example of banker Bulstrode from the novel Middlemarch by George Eliot serves as a basis for this inquiry. After describing the mechanism of self-deception in action the author develops an argumentthat in spite of the missing intention, the wrongdoing is voluntary (contrary to the case of negligence) and the agent can be held responsible for it.
