Caste or qualification? Chaitanya Vaishnavas' discussion on brahmanas in colonial India
Original language description
If there are so many problems with definition of caste and subcaste in India, it is necessary to analyze the whole framework of Western ideas which generated the whole discussion. After discussing what kind of problem we actually encounter, the author provides critique of the dominant interpretation for rise of bhakti movements in Indian history. Although they are often described as protest against "brahmanical orthodoxy", the historical evidence show very different picture. Chaitanya Vaishnava movement, very influential during the British Raj, is chosen example for analyses. Its resources provide us with domestic ideas and concepts, which throw a very different light on the so called caste system.
