The Prague Foundling Hospital and its Role in the Care for the Poor

  • Original language description

"The paper deals with a foundling hospital in Prague and its role in child care. It briefly summarises the history of the foundling hospital, which was administered by the Provincial Maternity Hospital. The article focuses on monitoring the practice of childcare and it analyses the conditions under which children were admitted to the foundling hospital. It also focuses on foster care. The article shows how this institute recruited new foster parents and lists their responsibilities towards children. It also deals with a novelty in foster care – the so-called “two-third care”, which allowed either a biological mother or other blood relatives to become a foster parent of the child. The article specifies the role of this institute within the framework of care for the poor in Prague and its achievements. The foundling hospital fulfilled its role as guardian of uncared-for children and facilitated additional education or services for its residents. In addition, this facility also provided assistance to unmarried mothers."
