Authenticating Women: Ali Smith and Denise Mina

  • Original language description

The text focuses on the portrayal of contemporary women in the works of two female authors associated with different genres – novels or short stories and crime fiction. However, as Ali Smith has recently entered the realms of crime writing herself, the difference may be more subtle than it first appears. They both attempt to paint an authentic picture of contemporary female existence: Ali Smith taking a more general perspective, Denise Mina focussing on Scotland. The analysis of this quest for authenticity, which represents Scottish diversion from the monocultural focus of traditional nationalism towards an open cosmopolitan approach, concentrates on various facets in order to create as complete a mosaic as possible.
