Wilderness in Dana Stabenow’s and Nevada Barr’s Crime Fiction Series

  • Original language description

In American literature, wilderness is a complex and ambiguous concept, and although it may seem paradoxical, it has recently made its way into crime fiction. American crime fiction, due to the urban realism of the hard-boiled school and the police procedural, was traditionally set in large cities. It has only lately begun to move to more rural settings and even to wilderness represented, in both of the discussed series, by national parks. While Nevada Barr’s Anna Pidgeon series is set in various national parks throughout the United States, Dana Stabenow’s Kate Shugak series takes place in a fictional national park in the Alaskan Bush. Exploring the concept of wilderness as topos and as environment, the chapter analyzes how wilderness is depicted in the selected crime fiction series.
