Introduction. Moral Economy at Work
Original language description
This volume addresses moral reasoning and values as they are embedded and evoked in economic action. It looks specifically at how moral economic obligations and acts arise out of and within the context of work. The idea of moral economy has been explored and assessed in numerous disciplines. The anthropological studies presented here provide a fresh understanding and different dimensions of the idea by showing how the relations of workers, employees and employers, and of firms, families and households are interwoven with local notions of moralities. From concepts of individual autonomy, kinship obligations, to ways of expressing mutuality or creativity, relations at work, and state policies, moral values exert an unrealized influence, and these values guiding interactions often produce more consent than resistance or outrage.
