Imperial Envoys in France in the Second Half of the 17th Century
Original language description
The chapter deals with the diplomats of Emperor Leopold I at the court of Louis XIV in the second half of the 17th century. The authors show that the emperor did not have permanent representation in France due to the tensions and several wars between the two monarchs. In times of peace, however, both sides established diplomatic relations and a total of nine imperial diplomats were sent to Paris. None of them received the rank of ambassador. Four of these missions have been better documented and the authors compare them in the chapter.
