Conceptual Change in Emotional Contexts

  • Original language description

The chapter offers a conceptual reflection of environmental emotions understood as motivational phenomena. While a version of the cognitivist view on emotions is accepted here, the conflation of the insight that emotions are forms of understanding (and can be said to have reasons) with taking emotions as rational deserves critical scrutiny. Understanding the right kind of emotions, for instance, the negative environmental emotions (anxiety, grief), as something a rational person should feel "because they will bring about the consequence of the right kind of environmental behavior and action" means to overlook the true nature of emotions. Attaining a conceptual clarity about what one feels requires seeing in what sense ones emotions are responses to the lived reality of the world and that moving oneâs way of understanding in a certain direction requires work of imagination.
