AbstractThis entry considers Weil’s relationship to literature from the three-dimensional perspective of Weil as reader, Weil as writer, and Weil as translator. Weil’s vast reading of world literature is presented as part of her search for truth, goodness, and beauty: her standards for literary works were aesthetic, moral, and spiritual at the same time. This applies to her own work as well, introduced here in relation to her philosophy. The entry shows how Weil’s literary work – mainly, the unfinished tragedy Venice Saved and a small number of traditional poems that she hoped to publish – express key themes from her philosophy, such as attention, decreation, obedience, affliction, friendship, beauty, and more. Weil also translated, and theorized translation as an act of attention. Her Homer translations do make errors, but they represent the spirit of the work and indicate the importance of the Iliad to her worldview. Weil’s afterlife in translation is considered. This entry concludes that Weil’s literary work sheds further light on an important thinker. She joins other French philosophers who have turned to literature to express what their philosophical work could not.
