Rheological properties of thermochromic offset inks
Original language description
The objective was to study rheological behaviour of thermochromic offset inks. Thermochromic ink is a composite of a thermochromic pigment and a vehicle. The pigment ie commonly a leuco-dye-developer-solvent system encapsulated in polymeric envelope. Thepolymeric envelope of studied inks was made from melamine formaldehyde resin. The vehicle consists of a binder, in case of offset inks it is a resin, waxes, driers and solvent. The solvents used in studied inks were non-polar compounds with larger molecular weight. The rheological properties of thermochromic inks at 40 °C were similar to Newtonian liquids. Shear viscosity was almost stable through shear rates within the region 100-2000 s-1 and its values were much lower than shear viscosities measuredat 20 °C. The results demonstrate a very dramatic influence of the temperature on the shear viscosity of studied inks, that can result in non-uniform ink transfer in inking unit of printing press.
