    Antimony trioxide-modified carbon paste electrode (Sb2O3-CPE) was developed and tested in combination with square-wave anodic stripping voltammetry as a new "mercury-free" sensor for the determination of selected heavy metal ions at the low ug L-1 concentration level. Measurements were carried out using non-deaerated solutions of 0.01 M HCl (pH 2) with Cd(II) + Pb(II) as model ions. Several important experimental parameters, e.g. deposition potential, deposition time, and the concentration of hydrochloric acid were studied and optimized, when the electroanalytical performance of the Sb2O3-CPE was critically compared with bismuth trioxide-modified carbon paste electrode (Bi2O3-CPE), and with the in-situ prepared antimony film carbon paste electrode (SbF-CPE) using either 0.01 M HCl (pH 2.0) or 0.1 M CH3COOH + CH3COONa (pH 4.4) as the supporting media.
