Decreasing the Friction Sensitivity of TATP, DADP and HMTD
Original language description
The influence of water and WD-40 oil content in three primary explosives ? triacetone triperoxide (TATP), diacetone diperoxide (DADP) and hexamethylene triperoxide diamine (HMTD) on the sensitivity to friction has been investigated. All of these explosives belong to a group of organic peroxides that are often prepared in improvised conditions by both terrorists and young chemists. Therefore, knowledge of the possibilities for desensitization of these improvised explosives is very important to enable reducing the risk of explosion during handling (e.g. for EOD during their disposal). Sensitivity curves were obtained for solid organic peroxides with various liquid contents. The sensitivity greatly decreases with only a small quantity of liquid - up to about 20% of the liquid. Further increasing the liquid content has a negligible further impact on the sensitivity to friction. Water and WD-40 oil were compared as desensitization agents.
