EPIDEMIOLOGY, CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS AND TREATMENT OF NEISSERIA GONORRHOEAE INFECTION
Original language description
Gonorrhea is the second most prevalent sexually transmitted bacterial infection. It is estimated that gonococci cause more than 100 million cases of urogenital infections worldwide annually. The disease is associated with high morbidity and socioeconomicconsequences. An effective antimicrobial therapy is the only key element in gonorrhea control. Untreated gonorrhea can cause serious health problems in both women and men, including infertility and ectopic pregnancy. The increased incidence of resistantor multi-resistant gonococci worldwide puts these bacteria in the centre of attention for microbiologists.
