    Influence of anthraquinone on soda cooking of rapeseed straw

    The objective of this work was to determine the potential application of rapeseed straw in the soda pulping process and to investigate the effect of some cooking variables, such as active alkali (AA) charge, liquor-to-straw ratio and anthraquinone (AQ) charge, on the total pulp yield, amount of rejects and kappa number of the pulp. Stalks and valves of siliques of rapeseed plant (species Brassica napus L. convar. napus, genotype Labrador) were used for the batch pulping process. The preliminary resultsshowed that, for a liquor-to-straw ratio of 7, the rapeseed stalks cooked at 17 % AA charge gave the highest total yield of 40.9 %, whereas the lowest yield of 26.4 % was found at 21 % AA charge. Both kappa number and amount of rejects decreased with increasing the AA charge. However, the increasing liquor-to-straw ratio led to an increase in both kappa number and amount of rejects.
