The Variability of Yellow Chromate Pigments in Czech Paintings
Original language description
Artists have used various types of yellow chromate pigments since these were first synthesized at the beginning of the 19th century. As part of the present study, yellow chromate pigments of different compositions were prepared based on historical recipes and compared with pigments identified in the paintings by prominent Czech artists from the beginning of the 19th century until the 1940s from the collection at the National Gallery Prague. This study focuses primarily on zinc yellow, but it also examines cadmium chrome yellow, a rarely used pigment. Zinc yellow was quite popular among Czech painters between the 1860s and 1940s, appearing in a number of paintings. Surprisingly, cadmium chrome yellow was detected in four paintings by František Kaván from the 1890s. So far, this pigment has only appeared as a paint tube used by Danish painter P. S. Krøyer.
