The article deals with a role of small and medium-sized enterprises, especially of the so-called high-tech firms, in terms of their contribution to the knowledge-based society performance in the Czech Republic. The aim of this article is to find answersto these issues: Is the reason for support to SEMs rather their role as a stabilizer of markets, with regard to the employment issue, or as a contributor to the knowledge-based economy performance in the Czech Republic? Is there an increasing trend in efficiency indicators and in high-tech enterprises development indicators in the monitored period in the Czech Republic and does this trend correlate with growth of wealth within the Czech economy? Does the trend of the monitored high-tech services indicators correspond to the increasing contribution of the tertiary sector to the creation of wealth in comparison with high-tech manufacturing firms indicators?
