The regions play a crucial role in promoting sustainable development. Hence the strategic planning and sustainable development assessment at level of local government is becoming a highly desired and often discussed topic. The fundamental tools that canmake the concept of sustainable development real in practical terms are strategic plan, indicators of sustainability and budget. The goal of this paper is to investigate the relations between the need of sustainable development of regions and the structure of their budgets on the basis of strategic documents and regional budgets analysis. Based on these analyses the tools which can help to enhance and consolidate the field of regional sustainable development are identified.
